The Interview

1. When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?

I knew at a very young age that I wanted to be a writer. I remember drawing my first picture books and sharing them at school. I loved it. I had the idea for this book series when I was 12. So, this is nothing new to me. I’ve longed to be a writer since childhood and I’m glad to finally be able to present this to an audience.

2. Where did you get the idea for Solace of Time?

I had the idea at a young age. I wanted to tell an epic fantasy that merged a kingdom with castles, magic and dragons with an industrialized future with airships, cities, etc. The only way that I could tell this story was to use a form of time travel. I wanted to show a guy who was constantly down on his luck make mistake after mistake and see how far he is willing to go. This was the basis for the idea behind the novel.

3. What were the main challenges when publishing Enaya, the first volume of the series?

Great Question! I think the biggest challenge was building up a nerve to just do it. I had been rejected by agents and publishers before. I had been discouraged as well, but I believed in myself and I thought that if I didn’t do this, then I was letting myself down. When I decided to go through with publishing, I had to find the right editor. I wanted an editor that was passionate about my book as I was. I wanted somebody that believed in the story. I found one and was pleased with her feedback. I then wanted a cover that grabbed reader’s attention. I went to Deranged Doctor Design for the cover and they delivered. Once you make that decision, finding all the pawns can be a struggle. But don’t give up. You know what you want and what you like, so don’t be afraid to say ‘no’.

4. Which writers inspire you?

I’m a fan of Michael Crichton, J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and many others. I thought they did wonderful jobs with creating epic worlds filled with science or magic. These authors really pulled me into their world.

5. What draws you to the Fantasy and Young Adult genre?

I think fantasy has no rules. You can bend time, you can create mythical beasts and create worlds. Fantasy is a great way to really showcase your talent and create worlds. It’s great to write and a lot of fun as well. I also thing Young Adult is a big market. I think there are a lot more of young readers and I think young adult appeals to everybody in a way. I didn’t want to set an audience, I wanted it to appeal to everybody.

6. Do you write every day?

I don’t write as much everyday as I would want to, but I do try to write 3-5 pages a day. It’s easy to mess up, but if I can squeeze in these pages, I feel like I did my job.

7. Where do you see publishing going in the future?

I think people are really going to continue to self-publish. It’s easier and you get a lot more on royalties. I believe that self-publishing is going to dominate the publishing world and it’s going to attract a lot more people.

8. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Don’t give up. Don’t stop writing. Don’t stop believing in yourself. There will be days you feel like you aren’t going to make it, but that’s when you push harder. It’s easy to feel pressured by the world or social media, but if you love what you are writing, then there are people that will love it too.

The leader of this city, Norcross Kenneth, falls in love with Nile’s world and the magic within it, and he will stop at nothing until both their worlds are united. After Nile’s kingdom is destroyed by this new unknown force, he sets out on an adventure to send the future back into their dimension.

It’s not just this new threat that opposes Nile; the Lucian Empire has risen, and the Snake Queen wants Nile all to herself. When Nile forms a resistance with an unlikely band of heroes, he is forced to come to terms with his past and with the decisions that will affect his future.
