Writing Diaries #5 – How to juggle writing, blogging, and a long distance relationship

In Writing by Nya35 Comments

It has been a while since I have written one of these. I have been having guest posts and very interesting interviews which are in queue at the moment, which is great, and I hope you find them as exciting as I do. However, it is also time to talk a bit about my own writing journey. Welcome to Writing Diaries #5 – The Return. How to juggle writing, blogging, and a long distance relationship. Oh, and a full time job!

What happened since then

Last year in November, I have accomplished something amazing: I have started the draft of my novel. For 30 days in a row, I have written.

As many of you are aware of, I’ve also created my initial (and flexible) outline, a list of characters and settings, a map, and even a book cover! I have started using Scrivener, and have read many, many writing books. And while I admit I haven’t done much since November, I know that no one can take away from me the fact that I’ve taken the first step in my writing journey.

During that time, I’ve had the precious help of many readers, bloggers, and those who also embarked on NaNoWriMo, where I met the best writing buddy someone could ask for. Thanks, Cam, you are the best; don’t think I forgot we’ve promised we would be beta reading each other’s novels, so we do have to finish them. We still keep in touch, even if we are both aware life did get in the way – but we will get there, eventually.

I have reread my draft a few times since then. I often reach the last page and think: But I want to read more. I want to know more. What happens next? Well, I need to write it, that’s what happens next! I know I need to rewrite it too, but at this point, I would be happy with just having the first rough draft done.

Meanwhile, a lot has happened in my personal life, and professional too. With the process of moving jobs and houses, it took a while to settle in and focus again on blogging, writing, and even reading. It was during one of the hardest times in my life that I got closer to a fellow geek of mine, who is now my more-than-amazing boyfriend. Fenrile was the first person in my daily / “real” life to know about my dream of writing a Fantasy novel. Not only that, he was actually as excited as me, wanting to know every single detail of my story. And the best part? It’s that he actually loved it.

What does the Future bring?

Since then, me and Fenrile have started blogging together – which is a lot of commitment and dedication. But we are in a long distance relationship, so trust that we know all about commitment and dedication. Blogging with your partner is not as bad as some say. It’s actually quite fun if you do it for fun primarily. Do what you love, and share what you love.

A couple of weeks ago, I have interviewed a married couple of authors who wrote together. This inspired us both. We both share the passion of reading and writing (among many others). We are both geeks who love Fantasy and Science Fiction. So why not co-authoring? I didn’t know whether to start something from scratch or invite him to finish my own project. The fact that someone else besides me was in love with the concept and world I created (and no, I don’t think he’s biased for being my boyfriend) gave me motivation to want to continue working on something I had already invested my time in. Fenrile was very happy that I’d consider him to be part of this project, since he does say he loves every bit of it.

All of this means a lot to both of us, since it’s a big deal that I am able to share a project like this with someone else, but also important to him that I let him make part of this. In fact, we have made such great progress during the last couple of weeks. I could have never done so much on my own. We have corrected plot holes, and come up with many ideas for major plot points. We have both been pinning images for inspiration of characters and settings; and if all goes well, all I can say is that you’ll be hearing about our finished Fantasy novel soon. Wish us luck!

Other writing projects

I have also revisited my first short story a few times. I even tried to submit it to the competitive market of Science Fiction magazines, but not much luck there. I know I have done a few mistakes writing-wise that I probably wouldn’t now – that’s the point of progressing and learning, isn’t it? Even though I still like my initial idea, let’s say it was not perfectly well executed. The few people who have actually read it (I doubt the editors of the magazines would go past the first lines) told me they would like to read more, know more. So perhaps the open ending was a bit too risqué, too experimental. Perhaps I should extend it, maybe even make a novella out of it some day? Otherwise, I will just make a freebie, on Kindle, or even here on the blog, for my loyal subscribers. Would be happy to know your thoughts.

So what?

I think the best lessons I have learned since then were:

Believe in yourself. If you don’t, no one else will.

Enjoy what you do. If you do it for love, then you’re halfway there.

Take a break, but don’t give up. We get it, life happens. Take a break, regain energies, and then get back to it.

Share what you love, with who you love. I can’t say how lucky I am to have someone in my life who I can share my hobbies and passions with. No distance can come between this.

wow, you really have a lot on your plate and did a great job juggling everything! even though it’s a LDR, your relationship with your partner is so sweet and inspiring! nothing beats having a better half who shares your ideals and inspiration! good luck on co-authoring the novel.

  2. Trista

I love it when people come together and share opinions.
    Great blog, stick with it!

  3. Ericka

I constantly spent my half an hour to read this web site’s articles or reviews daily along with a mug of coffee.

I truly love your blog.. Great colors & theme. Did you develop this web site
yourself? Please reply back as I’m planning to create my
very own website and would love to know where you got this from or what the theme is named.

Thanks Jim. Yes, in the case of my blog, I have purchased a theme, and have then edited to my liking. I am available to do graphic and web design services, so feel free to contact me if you’re interested.

You are so inspiring! I don't know how you're able to do all those things together without collapsing.
I feel like I never get to do all the things I need and want to do on time..Like I'm always late.
And the fact that you are also in a relationship while doing all this is really unbelievable. I guess you are quite lucky that you guys share the same Interests. It makes it easier.

  6. Rachel Arendelle

It's beautiful how blogging brought your relationship together and stronger. I think if you put your heart to it, there's always a way. Good job in juggling all the aspects in your life neatly.

  7. Rowena C

I love reading the journey that you have. It is hard to be on a long distance relationship (been there) but you are correct if there is trust everything is possible and I can see that you and your partner have a great relationship as well.

Sounds very busy for you. That is amazing that so many positive things have come through for you. Finding love is the most amazing thing to happen to anyone and the fact that you work together as well is an added bonus. Doing what you love with those you love is truly living

My fav. lesson was "take a break but don't give up". It is true that you have to regain your strength and recharge your energy so by the time you come back, you are full of enthusiasm and make a good start.

Juggling things can sometimes bring out the stress in you particularly if backlogs are everywhere! But if that is definitely the nature of our day to day work, things are manageable though provided that we organize our work and time. As for me, so far, I am definitely working on my studies, being a mom, blogging, and business. So far, everything is working accordingly though sometimes I find myself hanging on some things.

The moment I read the title, I thought, "Was this post made specifically for me?" haha. I am also in a long distance relationship and I write and blog too. I've been putting off participating in NaNoWriMo for years because I don't think I'll have enough time out of work to do that. However, I have around 3 novels (one half-way which I started around 2011) that I've been busy on, so that may have been one reason why I decided to skip NaNoWriMo. 🙂 Hope you proceed with your novel.

  12. Sa Bine

Good tips Ana, I have been in a long distance relationship myself. It's not always easy. Even to blog together being in a relationship, is really impressive. Great to build trust and being a team. Something you can enjoy the rest of your life!

  13. Maria

I really think those tips are really very helpful! I have nothing more to say but I really appreciate you sharing those 🙂

  14. Carola Knubben

I loved reading your article! It's true, it always a challenge to combine everything! It's to read how you do it. It's good to read that you're doing what you love. That also gives so much energy. I write my blog together with my boyfriend and sister in law. It's a lot of fun, but also hard work. But it's so nice to do what you love

  15. Emma Haagensen

This is amazing! It's so hard now a days to have a long distance relationship and it's so good that you too make it work! Plus your blogging together now which is awesome :))

  16. Lauren Freya

That's amazing, good for you! I imagine writing a novel would entirely consume your thoughts, I't would constantly be on my mind, the first thing when I wake up and even in my dreams!

  17. TheGracefulMist

I like writing in general. Whether it`s just plans, random thoughts, for blogging or for my own stories, I always seem to find time to write. It just comes naturally to me. That`s why even if we`re busy, we can find time in doing something we really like.

I believe it always takes time for things to settle down so it is always better to give some time, be patient, take a deep breath and let the things go with the flow. I understand that we as humans are impatient and always want everything so quickly. Keep working hard and you will definitely attain success because you deserve it.

  19. Berlin Domingo

Ive been wanting to write a book but i would always put it aside with all the busy schedule ahead. Now, ive learned it will never be a book until I give time for it. Thank you for the inspiration. Will then give and put time on it.

  20. Joanna

I think that writing a novel together is a great idea. It will make you both get to know each other a little bit better and manage to get into each others life, which is great. Good luck and I am looking forward to reading it.

"Take a break, but don't give up." – yes! yes! yes!
Can't wait to hear more details! It takes so much perseverance but you just CAN do this! #believeinyourself <3

  22. Ana De Jesus

Hun I cannot wait to read your joint fantasy novel, in fact if you need someone to review it or give it a read I would be more than happy to! xxx

    1. Author

Thank you so much Ana. We really appreciate it 🙂 And we promise we will share it with you once it’s finished (which might take a while haha).

  23. Tiina Arminen

Life is never easy and nothing come free and you have definitely aware of that and have been working rally hard to be there where you are now. I love those kind of tips – the things what you have learnt – they are so true and finally in my life I have started to have them as my guidelines.

  24. JJ Johnson

It is absolutely a blessing to have a companion in your life with whom you can share your passions and dreams with and one who lifts you up and supports you.

  25. Madz

I think it’s wonderful that you’re working on something together.I was in a long distance relationship before so it helps when you spend time on an activity together.I wish you luck on your writing endeavor.I also want to write a book but probably it’ll be essays.

  26. Robert Lee

It takes a little while to settle in after moving to a new house, as well as a new job. For most people, that two alone would have taken all the time they have and having no more energy for other tasks. You, on the other hand, have to write and blog. It's not easy but you are doing better then well. Having a long distance relationship can be challenging and yet, as busy as you are, it works for you.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. Author

Thank you so much for the motivational words Robert. I never thought a long distance relationship would ever be something I’d be capable of doing, but when love comes, love wins:)

  27. Xavier Baldacchino

I do love every bit of your story just like I love every bit of you. Your post is amazing and you know I feel the same as you do. It's pure happiness to share every single one of our passions together. You helped me realize one of my dream projects, to create a blog and the fact you are part of it is even more wonderful and I never knew it would happen. I also always wanted to write, and your story is so amazing, I feel truly happy and proud to be part of it. I can only be cheesy – but honest – now to tell you that you are absolutely wonderful and amazing. I never thought you would actually be real and come into my life. I love you Angel, and keep in mind though, that you are not the only one believing in yourself. I do believe in you as well. I am proud of you, and proud to be yours. Always and Forever. <3

Thank you so much for this. I was going to reply here, but then I thought I’d tell you the rest in private 🙂 Always and Forever.
